[ARCHIVED] Strong Storm Expected to Bring High Winds & Rain

2014-12-10 storm map

The National Weather Service is predicting a strong winter storm system will move into the Bay Area beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10th, with reports stating this storm is expected to be “one of the strongest storms in terms of wind and rain intensity" since storms in October 2009 and January 2008.

Rainfall totals are currently projected to range from 1-4 inches in urban areas, with high winds from 20-40 mph with gusts up to 40-60 mph. This volume of rainfall may overwhelm waterways and roadway drainage systems, leading to flash flooding.

The City provides free sandbags and sand to Menlo Park residents at the following locations (NOTE: Please remember to bring your own shovel):
Residents are encouraged to be proactive and prepare their homes and their families for the storm by doing the following:
  • Clear debris including leaves and vegetation from gutters and drains.
  • Secure loose outdoor objects including decorations, patio furniture, etc.
  • Stock up on food and household supplies to be ready in case of an extended power outage.
Motorists are urged to slow down and drive with caution during and after heavy rains due to wet conditions, potential roadway flooding, and possible debris in the road.

City staff, including Police and Public Works department personnel, will be monitoring the storm and available to respond to flooding and other weather-related emergencies.
