Effective January 2, 2015, the fee for recycled paper bags or reusable bags provided at checkout from all local retail establishments increased from 10¢ to 25¢. This increase was included and approved in the original San Mateo County Reusable Bag Ordinance which the City began implementing on April 22, 2013. The purpose of the ordinance is to protect the local environment by reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the Bay from plastic bag litter. Retailers keep all revenue earned from bag sales and must keep record of the sales on itemized receipts.
To assist businesses with compliance, the following
retailer resources are available for FREE:
- Retailer fact sheets
- Posters
- Register tent signs
- Reusable paper bag and recyclable bag vendors
Resources are also available to Menlo Park residents which include “Got Your Bag?” reminder window clings and reusable bags (while supplies last) that can be requested or picked up from
City Hall.
