The Menlo Park Boys Gymnastics team competed at the Spirit of the Flame meet at the San Jose Convention Center on February 24 and 25. The Spirit of the Flame meet is considered a premier event and is attended by teams nationwide.
Lachlan Kirby placed first in his age group. Paul Whelan had a personal best performance with a press to handstand which he was able to hold during his floor exercise routine. Joseph Louis, one of our newest team members, placed 2nd on parallel bars and Ezekiel Eason placed 5th on floor exercise. Noah Kim was 6th on floor.
The Spirit of the Flame meet offers gymnasts the opportunity to compare themselves to athletes from around the country. It helps to put into perspective what they are striving for and the skills they need to achieve their goals. By watching other athletes and hearing about their training schedules, it teaches both the athletes and their families about the dedication and hard work it takes to be a premier athlete. Preparing for competition helps to develop good time management skills as well as a good work ethic.
