Cal Water crews began work to replace a water main along Santa Cruz Avenue between Olive Street and University Drive. The project increases the water capacity creating better flow, more reliable service and fewer disruptions due to water main breaks, as well as improved fire protection. The existing 3,875 feet of 6” diameter pipe will be replaced with 12” pipe while all of the side street laterals will be connected with 8” pipe. A total of 57 properties will get new connections and 18 fire hydrants will be installed or replaced. Work started Aug. 1 and is expected to last up to 90 days. Expect traffic delays during the work hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as there will be lane closures and intermittent detours.
During the first phase (pavement saw cutting), the center two-way left turn lane will be closed in 300 foot segments. During the next phase (pipe installation), traffic will be reduced to one lane for both directions with flaggers directing traffic. Cross streets within the work zone will be closed. During all phases, trenches will be back filled with temporary asphalt at the end of each workday. The final phase will be the installation of the permanent asphalt.
The
Santa Cruz Avenue sidewalk project will begin after the completion of the water main installation project.
