With increasing probabilities of strong El Niño storms this winter, the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority and its partner agencies worked together to prepare the San Francisquito Creek and surrounding communities for high flows. At a media event held in East Palo Alto on October 14, staff leadership from the JPA, Santa Clara Valley Water District, San Mateo County Flood Control District and the cities of Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park shared information about immediate creek improvements, such as the removal of vegetation and reinforced creek banks and provided an update on the long-term flood protection project underway.
The event highlighted the new JPA website with information in English and Spanish that predicts creek flows, provides a two-hour early flood warning and shares a map of expanded sandbag locations. This website shares winter preparedness efforts and flood protection measures underway to protect previously flooded communities along San Francisquito Creek. Each agency participating in the JPA has a link on their website with this information.
The City's storm and flooding preparedness webpage provides information on preparing for storms and flooding, sandbag locations open to residents to use in preparation for potential rain, and creek monitoring.
