The League of California Cities presented the prestigious Helen Putnam Award of Excellence in Public Safety to the City of Menlo Park’s police department on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the League’s annual conference and expo taking place at the San Jose Convention Center.

This award recognizes the reintegration of community policing within the Belle Haven community to address crime and violence concerns that plagued the community for years. The police department began an extensive community engagement process to coincide with the Belle Haven visioning process. The top concerns and issues identified were gangs, violence, traffic and the lack of a cohesive program for involving the community in the public safety strategy.

This award illustrates the police department’s partnership with residents and private entities to work together to create a city committed to serving our community. Over the past two years, it is clear that everyone is becoming an active participant in making Menlo Park a safer place to live, work and play.
