A six-month trial of modifications to the Alma Street/Ravenswood Avenue intersection was initiated in May 2015 to improve safety at the rail crossing. The modifications included temporary barriers that restricted left-turns in all directions and right-turns from eastbound Ravenswood Avenue to southbound Alma Street. On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, City staff completed the first phase of evaluation for the trial. It was found that while improvement was observed during non-congested time periods, during the evening commute period, the congestion on Ravenswood Avenue increased the risk of motorists that may get stuck on the tracks. As a result, the right-turn barriers were removed Tuesday, September 15, 2015. Staff will continue to actively monitor the trial installation, before the results are reported to City Council later this year.
