On July 31, 2014, the Police Department held a neighborhood Watch Orientation meeting at the new
Neighborhood Service Center. Organizing neighborhood watch groups was one of the goals that residents established as part of the
Belle Haven Neighborhood Action Plan. Eight Belle Haven residents attended with the goal of helping make their neighborhood safer. Sergeant Matthew Ortega and Carolina Gaskin from the Police Department gave a presentation explaining the neighborhood watch program and the role of a block captain. Attendees learned that the program is not driven by the police department but by them and their neighbors. The group agreed that the Belle Haven Neighborhood would benefit most by working as a cohesive group. The emphasis of this group would be to educate neighbors about crime prevention and neighborhood safety. Some of the ways they suggested to reach out to neighbors included creating a community e-mail roster, as well as utilizing
Nextdoor as a form of communication. This along with informational community meetings will drive the program and build a strong Neighborhood Watch in Belle Haven.
