More schools are resuming in person education in and with that more children are walking and rolling in the streets. Here are some reminders to stay safe while traveling to school:
- Be visible on the road! Wear bright color clothing and wear a bike vest or reflective vest if you are biking.
- Plan your route to school ahead of time: Use your schools’ Walk and Roll Map to plan the best routes to school.
- Practice your routes with your family during the weekend.
Parents! When is your kid ready to walk alone? Before walking alone to school your child should be confident in:
Following walking rules
- Look left, right, and behind before crossing at corners
- Follow traffic signals
- Use paths and sidewalks, where provided
Walking predictably
- Walk - don’t run - across the street
- Watch for cars turning or pulling out of driveways
Having a safety plan
- Develop a plan with your child in case of an incident while walking
Staying aware
- No texting or talking on cell phones while walking
- No listening to music with headphones while walking
