Since January 2015, the public works department has added internal activities to encourage a healthy lifestyle and promote teambuilding. Staff is encouraged to join scheduled daily walking challenges around Burgess Park, with a goal of 1 mile under 15 minutes -- equivalent to about 2,000 steps. Studies have shown that walking increases the blood flow to the brain which helps strengthen cognitive function. The maintenance division participates in daily morning stretches to help prevent workplace injuries and reduce workers' compensation claims. In addition, department staff formed the FUN Committee, which organizes Friday teambuilding activities including potluck lunches or snacks, fully funded by staff.
