As people are staying home, quarantining and practicing social distancing as an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, you may have found some extra time on your hands. Check out this free
pedestrian/bike safety curriculum created by the Springfield/Eugene SRTS program. This is a great resource for parents and teachers to teach kids at home the importance of bike/pedestrian safety. In addition, start biking to school or around your neighborhood using these helpful tips.
Set a goal and plan to bike at least one day per week:
- Practice the route on the weekend.
- Get ready the night before (prepare backpacks, helmets, bikes, locks, water-bottles).
- Set alarm clocks to wake up early.
Seek solutions to overcome challenges:
- Live too far? Drive, park and ride part way to school.
- Have younger kids or too much to carry? Consider getting an electric assist bike.
- Don’t feel safe? Ride with a group to increase visibility. Drive to a quieter route with slower speeds, and fewer cars and intersections, and start from there.
