The city’s
Walk and Roll Maps show suggested routes to walk or bicycle to school safely and include safety tips for walking, biking and driving. A total of 23 Walk and Roll Maps was created for both public and private schools that serve Menlo Park families.
In August 2019, the Walk and Roll maps were presented at the Complete Street Commission’s monthly meeting. The commissioners recommended engaging the local school communities to create a “top safety tips list” for each school. Those customized tips would be developed by school officials and parents, and placed on the first page of each map.
In fall 2019, a pilot program was created for Laurel School Upper Campus with two parents and two administration officials. The list highlights things for parents, students and school neighbors to look out for, as well as identified “hot spots” near the school. These locations typically have heavier traffic, and are areas where drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists should use added caution and care to share the road. The tips also bring attention to drivers about parking restrictions, bike safety near the school and the safest crossings for pedestrians.
Parents and Schools interested in developing their own customized safety tips list and having it added to their Walk and Roll map, should send their suggestions to
Safe Routes to School Coordinator Andre-Anne Cadieux before June 1, 2020.
