The city has finalized many of its Safe Routes to School strategy and developed Walk and Roll maps for public and private schools based on stakeholder and community feedback. Throughout 2019, feedback from school officials, parents, students and bike/pedestrian safety advocates was gathered and incorporated into the strategy and maps.
The
Safe Routes to School Strategy provides a framework to implement the program in local schools. In addition to giving an overview of the existing efforts to promote and facilitate walking and bicycling to school, the strategy document details the recommendations and goals for program partners (the city, school districts, private schools and the community).
The Walk and Roll Maps highlight suggested routes to walk or bicycle to school safely and include safety tips for those who walk, bike or drive. Two dozen Walk and Roll Maps were created for both public and private schools that serve Menlo Park families. Additionally, maps for Beechwood School, Belle Haven Elementary School, Ravenswood Middle School and Willow Oaks Elementary School were translated to Spanish. The maps are available on the city’s
Safe Routes to School webpage.
The city’s Safe Routes to School Task Force will evaluate and update the maps each summer to reflect potential changes (e.g., school attendance boundaries, new pedestrian or bike facilities, better routes used by students, etc.).
