Traffic collisions, congestion, and safety have been a major concern for the Menlo Park community for many years.
In 2018, the police department began a special initiative to reduce the number of injury collisions while increasing the safety of motorists, bicyclist and pedestrians and addressing congestion issues.
Directed enforcement by patrol officers was initiated, using intelligence based and data driven strategies to address the growing regional traffic problem.
An intense hiring and training program to staff the motorcycle traffic unit was started and in July of 2019, the traffic unit was fully staffed with three officers on motorcycles (both traditional and all electric), and a traffic Sergeant.
The City's Traffic Strategic Plan was created to optimize the enforcement and education efforts of both the traffic unit and uniformed patrol force to address the myriad of traffic issues throughout Menlo Park.
