Gymnastics Classes

The Classes

Menlo Park Gymnastics classes are designed to encourage the child's development as an athlete and a person. Classes are taught in a manner that allows the child to succeed, thus fostering a positive attitude toward physical development and personal relationships with other students and teachers. In our classes all students learn valuable skills, whether it is a forward roll or just how to share space in the gym with other members of their class. Our program offers an opportunity to swing on a trapeze, walk on balance beams, bounce on a TumbleTrak, tumble on a spring floor, vault over a horse, swing on the uneven bars, and play various games that develop strength, endurance, teamwork, and large motor skills. All of this is done in an environment that is nurturing for the young child and is also a lot of fun. Menlo Park Gymnastics has one of the largest Pre-School movement-education programs in the country. The majority of our classes are for students under the age of 6 years old. The program was one of the first to develop classes designed specifically for pre-school children. The classes begin when a child starts to walk.

Pre-School Classes

Understanding the reflexes that are the building blocks for all perceptual motor development, our lesson plans are age and ability specific. KinderGym, KinderStars, NewStars, MiniStars, and SuperStars classes promote improved kinesthetic awareness (body and space); loco motor skills, balance, hand/eye, and foot/eye coordination as well as communication and social skills.

KinderGym (Ages 1 - 3)

This is a parent participation class in which our instructors guide the parents on how to help their children to properly use our Gymnastics equipment safely and effectively. Individual movement exploration, guided discovery, and minimal organized activities are included in the curriculum of perceptive motor development for toddlers. Additional benefits include the opportunity to socialize with other children of the same age, learning to share, and following simple directions.

KinderStars (Ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2)

A parent participation class for 3 year old students that still may need the security of a parent. Designed for the child that is working on separation or being able to focus on the instructor, slightly more structured than KynderGym but not yet an independent class. Transitional class with the goal of having the child participate independently by the end of the session.

NewStars (Age 3)

This is our first level of structured gymnastics without parent participation. This class emphasizes fundamental gymnastics positions and basic skills on all gymnastics apparatus and floor exercise as well as gross motor activities, games, and individual movement explorations, emphasizing social as well as physical development.

MiniStars (Age 4)

Gross and fine motor skill activities, cooperative games, and individual movement exploration are the emphasis at this level with fundamental recreational gymnastics skills on all apparatus and floor exercise. The teachers encourage problem solving and creative thinking as the children begin longer skill combinations and cooperative work.

SuperStars (Age 5)

Gymnastics skills, flexibility, and strength development are emphasized at this level. Continued work on problem solving, creative thinking, social and language skills are also incorporated in the class in order to help prepare the student for classroom settings.

Developmental Classes

As the student matures, and the development of their tactile and physical strength improves, more complex gymnastic skills can be introduced. Level I through VIII class are fitness oriented in a gymnastics specific curriculum. Encouraging lifelong physical and mental well-being along with the development of gymnastics skills is our goal for all students. Gymnastics provides unparalleled challenges for the body, the mind, and the spirit. By meeting these challenges, children continue their development toward becoming confident, fit, and able adults.
