Eugène François Vidocq , 1775-1857: French criminal and “Father of Criminology” is our topic for October.

Who was Eugène François Vidocq (1775 -1857)? He was a criminal, an informant, founder of the French national police agency Sûreté Nationale (decreed by Napoleon), and the head of the first private detective agency as well as a key originator of modern criminology. Moreover, his life story was an inspiration for many authors such as Hugo, Balzac, and Poe. We will see that he also, unquestionably, had a big impact on the development of mystery fiction.

Discussion leader this month is Tim Winkler.
