Stormwater management

The State Water Board allows the City to discharge stormwater to local creeks and the Bay as long as it prevents, to the maximum extent practicable, pollution and sediment from entering its storm drain system. Specific requirements to this end are found in the Municipal Regional Permit of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and in Menlo Park Municipal Code 7.42 (Stormwater Ordinance 859).

As part of their new and redevelopment projects, developers are required to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater that flows into the City’s collection system from private property. Depending on the size of the project, the City may require special features that minimize pollutants at their source, infiltrate more rain into the soil and treat stormwater before it leaves the site. For larger projects, an agreement to maintain the stormwater treatment measure is also required. Clean water is good for families, good for businesses and good for the environment.
